Luxemburg

A failing national economy and a pending new presidential administration are affecting a Luxemburg's group's efforts to get a library opened in their village.

"There are new variables," said Lary Swoboda, chairman of Friends of the Future Luxemburg Area Library. "With the economy heading to a recession, people aren't willing to spend any money right now. Also, with a new president about to take office, we could see changes in federal funding for this type of project."

Swoboda said a third factor is that the municipal support necessary to get state approval for the library is still in the air. The Luxemburg Village Board did not discuss the status of its Library Committee during its most recent meeting last week, so the friends group is unsure of how to proceed. The group needs a municipality's stamp of approval to proceed with the state library application process, but last month two of the three committee members said they didn't want to continue their involvement.

"We're on hold, and we're going to play the waiting game for a while for all of these reasons," Swoboda said.

The board approved changes to the employee handbook, which goes into effect Dec. 1. Dec. 24 becomes a paid holiday.

The board also approved a local emergency management ordinance that complies with standards set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency; and issued a permit to the Wrightstown Lions Club to sponsor its annual Christmas Parade at noon Dec. 6.
