Stopping credit offers can prevent identity theft

The Wisconsin Office of Privacy Protection suggests stopping pre-approved credit card offers as a way to guard against identity theft. The interested should call (888) 567-8688 or visit www.optoutprescreen.com.

In both cases, you'll be asked for your Social Security number and date of birth.

According to OptOutPrescreen:

"Your Social Security number and date of birth are not required to process your request. However, providing this information will help to ensure that we can successfully process your request. This Web site's security protocols and features are designed to protect your personal information from unauthorized access or alteration.... If you do not provide your Social Security number, we will attempt to process your request without this information."
